Summer Internship Program – Full Time
Internship Term: Summer 2011
Program Description: Trickplay is an early stage,
well-funded software startup that is working with
some of the best-known consumer brands to create
a new set of experiences for TV. Trickplay’s
core product consists of an embedded-optimized
software platform for digital TVs and other
consumer electronics. We are looking for
current computer science and design students for
our annual Summer Internship Program. This is
an opportunity to gain professional work
experience, meet new people – from fellow
students to industryy veterans – and work in a
hot emerging market space. As a designer, you
will design assets, flow and user experience and
work closely with engineering and
development. Successful applicants will
participate in a 10-week program and explore the
app creation process, including definition, implementation and iteration.Â
Company Description Incorporated in 2009,
Trickplay has approximately 20 full time
employees. The team has designed and developed
a purpose-built software platform that anchors an
ecosystem of developers connected embedded
products (including TV, Blu-ray disc players, STB
and other consumer electronics) in a manner
similar to Apple’s App Store and Google’s
Android marketplace. The team has a proven
track record of early-stage success (including
multiple successful exits, returning in excess of
$100M), and includes alumni from Yahoo, Google, Adobe and Samsung.
Job:
·     Work in teams with other interns and
the Trickplay employees to explore and extend the
capabilities of the Trickplay software platform
to deliver new consumer experiences.Â
·     Develop applications designed
specifically for consumer electronicsÂ
Compensation:
·     $7,500 stipend over 10 week
internship period (June 13 – August 19, 2011)
·     Please let us know if you might
require a housing stipend and we can discuss during the interview process
Qualifications/Prerequisites:Â
·     Working toward, or possessing BA/BS
or other degree, in visual design, game design,
computer science, software engineering, or similar field
·     Strong visual design experience, particularly with UI design
·     Knowledge of design software such as
Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
·     General knowledge of programming
languages such as: C/C++, Perl, Python, Ruby, PHP, ActionScript, is helpful.
·     A portfolio or website exhibiting your design workÂ
Please keep in mind that characteristics matter
more than qualifications and experience. More specifically, we care about:
·     Clarity of thought and raw problem-solving horsepower
·     Hustle/persistence to get things done
·     Urgency tempered by an ability to listen
·     Strong values and good ethical compass
Interested candidates should submit:
1) Current résumé
2) Portfolio of design work (JPEGs, PDF or
website). Submissions without a portfolio will not be considered.
3) An answer, in no more than 2-3 paragraphs, to the following:
Software developers and consumer electronics
manufacturers are working to marry the Internet
and TV. They are bringing well-known brands
such as Facebook, Major League Baseball and
YouTube to TV sets in the form of apps or web
pages. This additional functionality is geared
toward making TV more social and more
interactive. Yet it requires a more extensive
degree of user input than simple channel changing
and passive television viewing. One might argue
that these apps are revolutionizing the way
people watch TV. The other side of this
argument says maybe these apps are too
much. Maybe they disrupt the lazy TV-watching
experience rather than enhance it.Â
What do you think, and why? Describe a
made-for-TV application that supports your
answer. (Keep in mind that there is no keyboard or mouse). Â
