About the Role
The Fyto Engineering team designs and builds systems and machines to improve the global food system. As a Senior Automation Engineer, you will lead the creation of robotic and automation technologies from concept design to R+D stage prototyping and implementation on commercial Fyto farms. You will work closely with our team of engineers, plant scientists, and production managers to guide the company’s vision of autonomous, sustainable protein production.
What you’ll do
* Design and integrate new electrical/automation and mechanical systems for Fyto’s novel robotic farming systems, including for motion control of tractor-sized robots and development of novel sensors
* Design electrical layouts and power systems needed to build Fyto’s multi-acre farms, and oversee their construction from empty fields to automated protein farms
* Work with external contractors and vendors to make designs a reality, including creating design specifications, checking wiring diagrams, verifying mechanical layouts, and performing Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) or Site Acceptance Tests (SATs)
* Integrate sensors, transmitters, and actuators with Fyto’s control software and SCADA systems
* Work at the interface of mechanical design, motion control, sensor development, data science, and material handling
Your required qualifications
* At least 3 years of professional experience, and an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in an automation-related field (e.g. mechanical engineering, electrical / controls engineering)
* Demonstrated ability to design and integrate electrical or mechanical hardware from notebook to functional prototypes
* Familiarity with schematic wiring diagrams, process sensors / transmitters, and sensors in electromechanical systems
* Quick learner who takes ownership in their work and is able to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment
* Ability to travel to Fyto farms, machine shops, or fabricator sites throughout California as needed
* Have a valid driver’s license and good driving record
Preferred qualifications
* Familiarity with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s)
* Experience with computer aided design (CAD) such as AutoCAD or Solidworks.
* Experience with developing control panel drawings
* Familiarity with commissioning and troubleshooting intelligent communication busses, such as CAN, Profibus, ethernet IP, Modbus TCP/IP
* Familiarity with developing test protocols and executing factory acceptance tests
Physical activity requirements
* Walk across a variety of terrains, including uneven surfaces
* Climb, jump, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch and install equipment
* Stand for extended time periods
* Lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
* Work in conditions with varying humidity, sunlight and temperatures (32°– 95° depending on the season)
