electric vehicles, battery packs, drive systems,
and energy products that are changing the future
of transportation and sustainable energy. We are
building technically strong, fast-moving teams
that pride themselves on superior execution.
Position: Core Test Team - Mechanical Design Internship / Co-Op (Spring 2020)
Description: The Core Test Team is seeking an
amazing mechanical design intern to create robust
machine design concepts and detailed drawing
packages for custom designed machine build
projects and support full life cycle development
of automated test equipment, for Gigafactory 1
battery programs. The position is based in
Reno/Tahoe, Nevada. You will provide technical
support to the superstar team, revolutionizing
every facet of manufacturing test automation.
Responsibilities
Design, build and integrate automated test
equipment for the validation of vehicle products & energy products.
- Use mechanical design software (Solidworks,
CATIA) to create mechanical design concepts for
robust and low-risk machine designs that will
complete the project scope within the budget and schedule as requested.
- Identify areas of risk in your design and work
quickly to prototype and mitigate risk.
- Solve mechanical/electrical testing issues
during design: isolation, heat sinking and
cooling, tolerances, materials, fastening, and machine design.
- Complete mechanical design analysis as required
to ensure the machine design will meet all performance requirements.
- Work with electrical engineers, software
engineers and technicians within the team to
support tester build and validation, including
environmental and safety testing.
- Resolve issues and concerns with cross
functional teams including product design,
manufacturing, and maintenance/service.
- Retrofit existing test equipment.
Requirements
- Currently working towards a BS, MS, or advanced
degree in a relevant engineering program.
- Desire to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
- Desire to drive ultra-reliable, cost effective designs that beat schedules.
- 1+ year of experience designing best in class
mechanical products and test automation systems.
- Hands-on experience, previous internship and/or
project experience is preferred.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling software (CATIA, Solidworks).
- Be able to perform required analysis to ensure
a successful design (stress, strain, thermal,
tolerance, cost and mass optimization, etc.).
- Experience with FEA simulation, GD&T, and design for reliability concepts.
- Experience with material science of components
used in mechanical design is a plus (metals,
insulators, plastics, connectors, gaskets, etc.).
- Knowledge of relevant manufacturing processes
and a variety of engineering materials is preferred.
- Experience in deploying test machines in a
large scale manufacturing environment and ability
to come up with rapid methods for scaling and
duplication of test equipment, is a plus.
- You must be self-managed and committed to
working in a fast-paced environment.
- Remain engaged, proactive and positive in tough
circumstances, owning assignments and taking full accountability.
