CTO, SunFarmer / SunEdison Rural Energy Fund - hiring immediately
Want to help change the world, and get paid while doing it? Do you
love building things, and want to apply your engineering skills on
projects that directly impact thousands of people?

SunEdison Rural Energy Fund (SREF) is a nonprofit social enterprise
focused on providing hospitals, schools, and other critical services
organizations with access to reliable and renewable energy. We have
two core focus areas. First is to provide customers with an
affordable "rent to own" financing solution for solar energy, whereby
customers pay for solar energy over time. Second is to deploy best in
class monitoring and maintenance technologies to ensure that solar
systems perform in the field for the 20 to 30 years they are intended to.

Our team is composed of seasoned solar, engineering, and finance
experts. We have successfully raised funding, and are looking to make
a meaningful and lasting impact by pioneering new business models in
the energy sector. We are searching for a CTO to lead our engineering
and product development efforts. This is a great opportunity to join
a young and growing social enterprise in an important role that will
grow with your career.

Summary:
This individual will be an active member in SREF's leadership team
and be responsible for overseeing the development of SREF's technical
offering. Ideal candidate would be a technical guru with a background
in electronics and/or solar engineering. This role requires someone
that is passionate about solving energy poverty, has a willingness to
travel to field sites, and ideally has comfort with hands-on engineering.

Our team members are located in New York, San Francisco, and Toronto,
so we have some flexibility on where the CTO will be located. Please
note that expected travel may be up to 50% to international
destinations (currently Nepal, but expanding globally). We believe
spending time on the ground with our customers will be an essential
part of translating customer needs and constraints into our product offerings.

What You'll Need:
- A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. MS or PE
license a plus. Other engineering disciplines are considered based on
experience and skill set. A seasoned technologist with electrical or
solar background with exceptional hands on abilities will also be considered.
- 5+ years experience working in an engineering capacity at a
photovoltaic company, or designing commercial distributed generation
systems. We will also consider exceptional candidates that have
shorter experience.
- Strong knowledge of photovoltaic system design and optimizing
system components for energy production
- Ability to project manage complex engineering projects
- We value hands-on experience above all. Experience in any of the
following a huge plus:
   a) Solar system design, ideally with some exposure to batteries,
charge controllers, and off-grid inverters
   b) Programming controllers, PLCs, single board computers
   c) Implementing control and data acquisition through standard
communication protocols on Ethernet.
   d) Controlling inverters and/or variable frequency drives via
control networks
- Ability to work in a dynamic team environment to think outside the
box and draw on design and engineering skills to solve difficult
problems in new ways
- Experience working overseas and with different cultures, and a
passion for improving lives through renewable energy

What You'll be Doing:
- Provide leadership on technology vision, product architecture and roadmap
- Develop remote monitoring and control solution for off-grid solar
energy systems
- Creatively solve engineering and design challenges on the fly
(e.g., cost-effectively design solar systems in unique or
resource-poor settings; creatively use technology to influence local
stakeholders to perform regular battery maintenance)
- Travel to countries where we operate to scope, hire, and manage
third-party installers (e.g., local installation teams)
- Develop electrical designs for solar and battery hybrid electric systems
- Integrate systems with existing electricity infrastructure,
including diesel generators and electric grid
- Assist with system performance modeling, drawing standards, key
component specifications, sizing calculations, bills of materials,
etc., as necessary to ensure that SREF design best practices (best
practices designed by you) are achieved
- Constantly be on the lookout for ways we can better deliver impact
to our customers by improving our technology and product offerings

What's in it for You?
- Help lead and shape the course of a young social enterprise that
has already raised significant funding
- Make a difference by enabling health care, education, clean water
and other critical services through renewable electricity; feel great
about your work!
- A competitive salary with a leading, high growth entrepreneurial
social enterprise
- Comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, and vision
benefits; life insurance
- Generous vacation policy
- Ability to work remotely

SunEdison Rural Energy Fund (SREF), a US nonprofit corporation, was
established in 2013 with a generous grant by the SunEdison Foundation
and SunEdison, Inc. SREF is managed by an independent Board of
Directors. SunFarmer is our entity focused on solar project
development and financing in developing countries.
