experienced Applications Scientist to assist and advise our Marketing
and Sales teams on technical and scientific matters for this growing
business. This business is part of a successful and rapidly
expanding global company, Oxford Instruments plc, a leading provider
of high technology tools and systems for industry and
research. Located in Santa Barbara, California, Asylum is dedicated
to providing innovative instrumentation for nanoscience and
nanotechnology customers worldwide.

The Role

We are currently seeking an Applications Specialist to provide pre
and post sales technical support to customers on a global basis. As
a key member of our application team, you will run AFM demonstrations
for prospective customers, provide expert technical support (phone,
email and web forum) to customers as well as train customers on
instrument operation as well as the art and science of AFM. This is a
varied role that will involve you working closely with our sales team
to insure our customers expectations are being met.

In addition to customer demonstrations and training, you will be
responsible for

Fielding technical questions from prospective customers, interpreting
technical claims by competitors, contributing to marketing materials,
or simply educating non-technical staff on new applications or capabilities
Perform installations at customer sites
Present new application developments and data at conferences and
workshops, and in webinars
Develop new applications and techniques
Author technical notes, application notes, and scientific journal articles
Help continually improve the software by suggesting new features and
by reporting any bugs or user interface issues

The successful candidate will have:

PhD or Masters degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science,
Engineering or a related subject and preferably 5 years experience in
the field of AFM/SPM
Demonstrated ability to build and maintain customer relationships
Ability to function well in a fairly flat organization with a casual
management style
Willingness to travel
Excellent oral, written and presentation skills
High level of organization with strong documentation skills
Experience building technical credibility with customers
