IDEO and frog design. I'm growing my team in the new design and
innovation program at SMU. Join me!

The Lyle School of Engineering is seeking a passionate and engaging
Director of the Innovation Gym. The Innovation Gym is a 1200 square
foot design space that emphasizes hands-on learning through real-life
projects. It is a magnet for students who want to apply and expand
their emerging engineering skills in a collaborative and creative
environment outside of the traditional classroom. The Innovation Gym
director will run existing programs and help expand into new
territory. The ideal candidate will be profoundly creative,
collaborative, self-motivated and passionate about student learning.
We are looking for a technology fanatic who is human-centered in
their approach to engineering and who "thinks with their hands" when
searching for a solution: someone who loves to build.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Oversee and
manage student projects via the IDEs (Immersion Design Experiences),
which are typically conducted over academic breaks. Collaborate with
the Director of Design and Innovation Programs and others to identify
potential companies to participate in the program and generate new
student projects. Cultivate relationships with current or potential
companies who participate in the program. Serve as liaison between
the student team and the "client" company. Oversee and manage
proposed ad-hoc student projects, including deciding which projects
the Gym can support; Mentor and guide students through design
experiences, assist students with curricular projects as needed and
appropriate. Oversee marketing and communications for program, as
well as create brand presence for program at SMU and outside of SMU,
collaborating with the Director of Design and Innovation Programs to
devise marketing and communications strategy for program. Work with
other departments and student assistants to design website and
printed materials. Promote program within SMU and outside, as well as
develop new programs to promote SMU as thought leading center for
innovation and creativity. Leveraging other SMU programs (e.g.
TEDxSMU) and events to promote program; plan events for program.
Recruit students to participate in program. Conduct student outreach
to increase student use of Innovation Gymnasium. Oversee and manage
staff and/or student workers to help with administration and
facilities maintenance (e.g. ordering materials, keeping the space
organized, enforcing safety in the space). Assess student needs and
current/upcoming projects in order to make recommendations on tools
and equipment the gym needs. Conducting research on tools and
equipment (e.g. ensure they are state of the art, etc.). Direct and
oversee annual innovation competition, meet with student teams,
recruit judges and coordinate logistics of competition.

Bachelor's degree is required. Master's preferred. Minimum of five
years of work experience is required. Experience in engineering,
design, mechanical construction, electronics and programming is
strongly preferred. Candidate must possess a strong technical
aptitude to assist students with technical aspects of projects. Must
demonstrate strong verbal and interpersonal communications with the
ability to quickly build rapport with students, as well as client
companies. Candidate must be open-minded, creative and optimistic to
effectively support and guide student's ideas for projects. Must
possess strong organizational and project-management skills with the
ability to balance multiple priorities. Candidate must demonstrate
strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills with the ability
to build relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must be
self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimal
supervision and collaboratively within a team-environment. Priority
consideration may be given to submissions received by February 13,
2013. The position is open until filled.
