The Rockefeller University, a premier biomedical research institution
located on Manhattan's Upper East Side, seeks a Mechatronics Engineer
to join the Laboratory of Integrative Brain Function.
Will be a jack-of-all-trades engineer, developing and supporting
custom software/hardware systems for behavioral and
neurophysiological experiments in fruit flies. Will be responsible
for building an arena for testing insect behavior in which local
temperature can be accurately and rapidly controlled with an array of
Peltier devices. Will also be responsible for extending upon a
real-time virtual-reality system that combines video-image analysis
of fly behavior, visual-display presentation with LED displays or
projectors and electrophysiological data-acquisition. Work will
typically involve soft and hard real-time systems, where timing
information is critical. The laboratory extensively uses open-source
software and hardware and coding is primarily in Python, C, and
Matlab on Linux and Windows platforms. Depending on interest, the
position can extend to include further design and manufacture of
insect virtual-reality environments, small sensors for measuring
insect behavior (utilizing Atmel microcontrollers and custom-designed
printed circuit boards), tiny plastic platforms for restraining
insects (micro-machined with a CNC mill), and optical systems for
biological imaging applications.
Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred. Must be
comfortable designing electronic hardware/printed circuit boards,
manufacturing mechanical and electronic components, developing
software in several languages, and rapidly assimilating new fields of
knowledge, from optics to control theory, to build functional
devices. An interest in biology and a background in engineering,
physics or math necessary. Must be detail-oriented, accurate, and precise.
The Maimon lab aims to link the electrical activity of neurons and
the biochemical action of molecules to their computational roles in
animal behavior. The lab has a particular interest in understanding
how central brain structures, distant from the sensory and motor
periphery, govern behavioral choice.
