Role:
The Product Design intern will take on a variety of design-focused
projects related to the production refinement of ICON's A5 amphibious
aircraft. Possible project areas include cockpit ergonomics,
component specification, user- interface design, and ergonomic
refinements of exterior touchpoints. The role requires bridging the
needs of engineering, industrial design, manufacturing, branding,
ergonomics and human factors. It demands highly structured thinking
to navigate back and forth between technical engineering information
and more subjective disciplines like aesthetics, graphics, color and materials.
The Product Design intern will work closely with the company's VP of
Design and industrial designers at the company's office in Los
Angeles. He or she will also work with the company's engineers at
ICON's development facility in Tehachapi, CA. A successful intern
will earn the high confidence and trust of both designers and
engineers. In some cases, the position will require interfacing with
outside component suppliers to gain more detailed technical
information or to manage the development of custom component designs.
Required Experience:
* Undergraduate or graduate student in Product Design or Engineering
(mechanical engineering preferred). Recent graduates will also be considered.
* Superb analytical thinking skills. This person will be held to an
extremely high standard of structured thinking by his or her peers
and managers.
* "A builder" - Direct experience with prototyping. A personal need
to rapidly mock up solutions in 3D in order to answer questions
quickly. Excellent craftsmanship coupled with an understanding of
when speed should trump refinement.
* A body of work, student or professional, that demonstrates his or
her understanding of good design practices
* Excellent communication skills
* Excellent computer skills
* Extremely detail oriented
* Deadline and completion driven
* Performs at the highest standard of quality and integrity
Ideal Experience:
* Skilled in CAD software, Rhino or equivalent
* Skilled in Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator
* Passion for motorsports (motorcycles, Jet Skis, cars, boats, etc.)
* Passion for aviation and flying
* Familiarity with small aircraft
* Familiarity with composite manufacturing techniques
